5years without Proper Legislation in the kwara state House of Assembly.
..............We need Reformation in the Kwara State House of Assembly
As a concerned citizen deeply invested in the democratic governance of our dear Kwara state, Kwara, it is with a heavy heart that I write to address the current state of affairs in the Kwara State House of Assembly KWHA. The legislative arm, which should ideally serve as the hope of democracy and uphold the rule of law, appears to have deviated from its constitutional obligations. The State House of Assembly under RtHon Speaker Danlad SY, seems to have taken a different path from the standards set by his predecessor, Dr. Ali Ahmad. The Ahmad-led assembly was known for its transparency, accountability, and respect for the rule of law. Unfortunately, these attributes appear to have been replaced by a system that is more akin to APC family house than a legislative body.
The Speaker has been accused of acting as a bootlicker to Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, rather than maintaining the necessary separation of powers that ensures the democratic process. This apparent subservience undermines the autonomy of the KWHA and compromises the impartiality of its decisions.
One disturbing trend is the disregard for some bills, The "Local Government Autonomy Bill" and the "Kwara State Public Procurement Bill" have reportedly been ignored despite their importance in enhancing good governance at the grassroots level and promoting transparency in public procurement processes respectively. Don't forget the FOI BILL as well.
The alleged lawlessness in the State House of Assembly is a cause for concern. The sacking of elected council chairmen without justifiable cause and due process is a blatant disregard for the rule of law. This action not only undermines democracy but also dismisses the will of the people who elected these chairmen into office. Yet, TICs currently in place are not elected officials, and their continued occupancy of these positions is a violation of democratic principles.
The Kwara State House of Assembly should be a place where laws are made for the good governance of the state, not a platform for personal agendas. The Speaker and the other members have a responsibility to the people of Kwara to uphold the rule of law, respect democratic principles, and ensure that the House serves the interests of the people rather than personal or political interests.
It is quite displeasing to see that this docile House under Danladi has not submitted a single report as oversight on the controversial cum substandard Flyover named after our great late Nigerian/kwaran, Babatunde Idiagon despite the genuine calls by Patriotic kwarans on the poor job Execution of project which gulped Billions of Naira of common patrimony. The house is so weak, docile and insensitive on what it stands for rather what we are witnessing is the Encomium a House member registered on the Governor Abdulrahman not the Speaker on her legislative performance on project support not on bill neither on the oversight report.
I implore all well-meaning Kwarans to join in the call for the reformation of the Kwara State House of Assembly. Let us remind our lawmakers of their duty to uphold the rule of law and to act in the best interests of the people that elected them into offices.
